Back for the 2nd year of implementing live AR utilizing Unreal Engine 5 & disguise systems at the JUMPFESTA event, one of Japan's most important annual anime/mange event sponsored by Shonen-JUMP Manga, a renown comics publishing company. For this year, we had live AR sequences for 7 out of 10 shows, including: Haikyu!!, Jujutsu Kaisen, New Prince of Tennis, My Hero Academia, Kaiju No.8, Rurouni Kenshin and ONE PIECE.
Just as in 2022, I was invited to work as a Technical Director for show operation, performance optimization and programming within UE5 during the pre-production stage and also on-site at the venue. My role includes many tasks such as: debugging crashes/glitches during preview running, geometry optimization using SideFX Houdini, rendering optimization, working with disguise operators to setup event triggers between the different systems, with Art Directors to make visual adjustments, with show directors to adjust timing etc.
Since there are several of artists working on the AR FX Sequences and designs, they can cause all sorts of unexpected issues. At the end, with several full days on-site, we were able to reach a stable and reliable running state before the show days.
